Jessica has played or competed in almost every sport, anything to keep her busy and meet new people. Her current love is triathlons. Starting with off-road duathalons, adventure races and Xteras in 2005, her pursuit lead her to more traditional triathlons when she found there were just not enough off-road events to keep her busy. Given her profession as a Naval Officer, it was not until the summer of 2009 when she was assigned shore duty were she could really start to compete. In her first summer on shore, Jessica was able to compete in numerous sprint, Olympic and half-Ironman races. She quickly established herself as a top competitor in New Mexico. Growing up, Jessica did not always enjoy good health. While she played a lot of sports, she also worked two part time jobs and did not eat well at all. She was content with being the “athletic” girl which was simply a nice way of say she was big girl. As an adult, she suffered a torn ACL. The surgery almost proved more damaging then helpful when she developed a serious staff infection that threaten the bone, the graft repair and her leg. After a month of complete bed rest and over a year of rehab she was back at it. Determined to take better care of herself, and with an acceptance to the US Naval Academy, Jessica started working out more and eating better. Unfortunately the pendulum swung the other way for her, and she started working out too much and eating too little. A scary bout of shin splits from under nutrition and a trip to the nutritionist were she was diagnosed with disordered eating was the wake up call she needed. Armed with info from the nutritionist, Jessica’s focus became about balance. She began mountain biking and started skiing again. Of course these two sports let to numerous injuries, the most significant in March of 2003 when Jessica dislocated her hip and was told she would never be able to walk with out a limp. Despite what the doctors told her, she aggressively rehabbed her hip and came back to the world of sport and fitness even stronger. She learned to truly respect and take care of her body. |

Garett is no stranger to fitness. Working out from his early teen years, Garett has a lot of personal experience
His original training focused on supporting his soccer career which now spans 20 years. He furthered his personal fitness regiment by taking weight training classes while attending UNM.
Despite all his time and efforts in the gym, his overall approached still lacked focus.
Not until Garett graduated from college and started working, did he really find his fitness direction. Working as an engineer for the Department of Defense focusing on weapons effect testing, was he really forced to organize and use his time efficiently if he hope to keep working out.
Garett found his focus in triathlons. The three sport venue gave Garett the focus and the variety he needed. Garett turned to the practice of functional fitness. Instead of spending a day on legs and a day on arms, he began practicing multi joint exercise. He immediately found more success and enjoyment from this type of exercise.
While enjoying success, Garett is no stranger to disappointment and set backs. Growing up in Silver City, he lacked the formal structure of soccer organization that is so common to Albuquerque. His family lacked the resources to send him to camps in hopes of being scouted for college teams. Despite this, Garett still tried out as a walk on for the UNM soccer team. He was politely give time to show his skills, but the coaches already had there time, and did not give him a sincere chance.
From his soccer experience, Garett was forced to realize that there are some thing in life that you can control, and others that you can not. Furthermore, hard work should pay off, but some times you just get unlucky. In the long run, things turn out okay for Garett. He was able to focus on his school work and get involved in other things, while still playing soccer recreationally.
Recently, Garett had a reminder of how unpredictable life can be. During the summer of 2009 while competing in various triathlons, Garett developed a superficial blood clot. While not directly life threatening, the pain associated with the clot made him take a serious break from his intense training. A humbling experience, Garett was forced to truly balance his training with demands from his body. He still lives with clotting issues, but has over come by eating well and staying active.
While his plate is rather full with work and triathlons, with his efficient training and the increased energy he enjoys, Garett is also a practiced cook who prides himself on cooking healthy. One of his passions is keeping current on nutrition trends. He believes in subscribing to a primal type diet— eating like humans used to eat. He is also a spin instructor of 2 years and currently teaching at Defined Fitness and Kirkland AFB. Even with all that, Garett still finds time to play soccer and snowboard and make a pretty good spaghetti sauce. |
